		Engine Caterpillar’s exclusive ACERT™ Technology surpasses the most stringent emissions requirements in the construction industry. The U.S. EPA Tier 3 compliant C6.6 offers increased performance and reliability while reducing fuel consumption and sound levels.

		Powerful Performance The Cat C6.6 with ACERT™ Technology introduces a series of evolutionary, incremental improvements that provide breakthrough engine performance. The building blocks of ACERT Technology are fuel delivery, air management and electronic control. ACERT Technology optimizes engine performance while meeting U.S. EPA Tier 3 engine emission regulations. The Cat C6.6 engine in the M318D delivers a maximum gross power of 130 kW (174 hp) at a rated speed of 1800 rpm. This is 9% more horsepower compared with the 3056E in the M318C.

Increased Travel Speed The maximum travel speed for D-Series Wheel Excavators has been increased from 34 km/h (21 mph) to 37 km/h (23 mph). This 10% increase in travel speed reduces travel time between sites and increases productivity.

Heavy-Duty Axles and Stabilizers The D-Series Wheel Excavator undercarriage, with pin on/bolt on design, provides excellent flexibility, rigidity and long life. Smart hydraulic line routing, transmission protection and heavy-duty axles make the undercarriage an excellent match for wheel excavator applications. The front axle offers wide oscillating and steering angles. The transmission is mounted directly on the rear axle for protection and optimum ground clearance.

Advanced Disc Brake System The disc brake system acts directly on the hub instead of the drive shaft, avoiding planetary gear backlash. This solution eliminates the rocking effect associated with working free on wheels. The axle design reduces maintenance and lifetime costs, which are also reduced with 2000-hour oil change intervals.

Ride Control New on the D-Series, the ride control system improves operator comfort and allows the machine to travel faster over rough terrain with improved ride quality for the operator. The ride control system features accumulators that act as shock absorbers to dampen the front part motion. Ride control can be activated with a button located on the soft touch panel in the cab.

Automatic Transmission Automatic transmission gearshift (not available at first ship, availability to be announced later) is another new feature for D-series WEX. When the system is activated on the soft switch panel, the machine will automatically select the optimal gear, depending on the speed and torque demand.

Heavy Lift Mode For increased lifting and digging performance, a heavy-lift mode is standard on D-Series Wheel Excavators. Heavy Lift Mode provides 7% more lift capacity for 60 seconds at the touch of a button. Heavy loads can be easily moved in the full working range of the while maintaining excellent stability.

		Joystick Steering The unique joystick steering option enables an operator to reposition the machine while traveling in first gear with the slider switch on the right joystick. The operator can keep both hands on the joysticks while simultaneously moving the implements and traveling. The operator can do more precise work faster with increased safety around the machine.

Work Tools Caterpillar work tools are designed to function as an integral part of your excavator while providing the best possible performance. All work tools are performance-matched to Cat machines. Caterpillar also offers a wide range of specialized buckets; each designed and tested to achieve the best possible performance. Buckets feature the new Caterpillar K Series™ Ground Engaging Tools.

Work Modes Three power modes are available: economy, power and travel. Economy Mode is the most fuel-efficient mode, the power mode provides industry-leading performance, and the travel mode is automatically engaged when the travel pedal is pressed, optimizing the driveline performance, while preserving fuel economy.

		Hydraulics The state of the art load-sensing hydraulic system combined with a separate dedicated swing pump provides fast cycle times, increased lift capacity and high bucket and stick forces. This combination maximizes your productivity in any job.

Dedicated Swing Pump A separate dedicated variable displacement piston pump and fixed displacement piston motor power the swing mechanism. This closed hydraulic circuit helps to provide maximum swing performance without reducing power to the main hydraulic functions.

Closed Center Valve This system uses a variable displacement pump to provide flow on demand. Closed center systems flow only to the circuit activated, generating less heat with more precise flow control.

Heavy Lift Mode

Adjustable Hydraulic Sensitivity This function allows the operator to adjust the aggressiveness of the machine according to the application. For precision work, one of three different levels of aggressiveness can be preselected through the monitor and is activated with the right joystick trigger.

		Proportional Auxiliary Hydraulics Versatile hydraulic system can be expanded to use a wide variety of hydraulic work tools using multiple valve options. The Multi-Combined Valve is the core of the Tool Control System, allowing the operator to select up to ten pre-programmed work tools from the monitor. These preset hydraulic parameters support either one-way or two-way flow. The joystick sliding switches allow modulated control of the work tool. A dedicated Hammer circuit is the best option for tools that require one-way flow only, and do not require the flexibility provided by the Multi-Combined Valve. The Medium Pressure Function Valve provides proportional flow that is ideal for tilting buckets or rotating tools. A new feature for the D-Series Wheel Excavators is the optional second High Pressure valve. In combination with the Multi-Combined Valve, it provides the possibility to operate the machine with work tools or in applications requiring a third auxiliary hydraulic function, such as a tilting/rotating quick coupler.

Load Sensing Hydraulic System Load Sensing Hydraulic Systems are very efficient, providing better fuel economy and full hydraulic power on demand. Load sensing hydraulic systems receive a signal from each implement circuit. The highest implement signal pressure will control the output t of the pump. In NEUTRAL there is no signal pressure and the pump is at standby. When an implant is activated, the signal pressure rises, causing the pump to increase flow. The pump will increase flow based upon implement demand up to the capacity of the pump. When the system demands exceed pump capacity, the function with the lowest pressure receives the most flow. This type of system is very efficient providing better fuel economy and full hydraulic power on demand.

Boom and Stick Regeneration Caterpillar’s Boom and Stick Regeneration Circuits save energy, increase efficiency and reduce cycle times, while increasing productivity and fuel efficiency and lowering overall Q & Q costs. The circuit is in operation during stick in or boom down function. The weight of the implement forces hydraulic oil out of and in to the feed end of the cylinder. Recirculating oil directly from the emitted side to the feed side reduces the need to provide oil flow from the pumps, resulting in shorter cycle times and energy savings.

Smart Boom Although not available in NACD and LACD, the Smart Boom improves machine performance and fuel efficiency by using the weight of the boom to lower the boom in place of hydraulic power. This feature also allows the boom to free float while using a hammer, grapple or scrapping hard surfaces. Smart boom reduces operator fatigue while increasing performance and fuel economy.

		Operator Comfort The totally redesigned operator station maximizes comfort while increasing safety. The available auto-weight adjusted air-suspension seat with heated and cooled ventilated cushions improves operator comfort. Safety is enhanced by the new color monitor and optional rear-mounted camera.

		Interior Operator Station Improved visibility and ergonomics are two of the many new features of D-Series Wheel Excavators. The pressurized operator station provides maximum space, and is designed for simplicity and functionality. The fully automatic climate control adjusts temperature and air flow for exceptional operator comfort. The switches and controls in the cab are situated for easy operation. The more frequently used switches are centralized and situated on the right-hand wall, which also houses the attachment switches. The control panel for the optional air conditioner is positioned on the right side. The left-hand console is tiltable for excellent access to the cab. It includes the switches for the optional stabilizers, joystick steering, HCR and MCV. The full-color monitor with a graphical display is mounted on the right front corner to prevent the obstruction of visibility. This positioning allows the operator to see information displayed on the monitor panel simply by looking forward and the right. Other operator conveniences include a cigar lighter, ashtray, drink/bottle holder, magazine rack and integrated mobile phone holder.

Cab Mounts The cab shell is attached to the frame with rubber, composite mounts that limit the vibration and sound transmitted from the frame, substantially reducing interior noise levels.

Cab Sound The M300D Operator Sound Level is 72 dB, which is the result of Caterpillar’s quiet design cab. The specifically engineered cab has formed steel tubes made with a solid drawn process; the tubes run from the rear to the front of the cab on each side of cab, providing rigidity, durability and resistance to vibration.

Cab Air Filters The cab filtration system ensures clean air for the operator. The system can either recirculate the cab air (circulation mode), or supply fresh air from outside (ventilation mode). When ventilation is selected, fresh air from outside is drawn into the cab through a filter that is situated in the back of the cab and protected by a cover that can be removed when changing the filter.

Radio The factory-installed radio is located for easy access and has a remote on/off switch. The remote switch is located under the left armrest.

Climate Control An automatic climate control is available. The operator sets the desired temperature and the system will maintain the temperature.

Green Glass The M318D has green glass that provides UV/heat protection throughout the cab.

Foot Pedals Two-way pedals for travel and auxiliary circuits provide increased floor space, reducing the need to change positions. The foot pedal for auxiliary high-pressure circuit can be locked in the off position and used as a footrest for greater operator comfort.

Smart Travel Alarm While this feature is not available North America the optional adjustable travel alarm allows the operator to select the mode of operation. The alarm which sounds when moving the machine forward or reverse, can be set in three modes (always on when traveling, always off when traveling and an auto mode - alarm will stop sounding when the machine has moved more than 10 seconds).

		Cab Construction

		Deluxe Seat The new deluxe seat guarantees maximum comfort for the operator. The seat is equipped with an active seat climate control and automatically adjusts to the operator’s weight, guaranteeing relaxed, ergonomic sitting. The seat is easy to operate because of its intuitively placed controls.

		Viewing Area

		Monitor The new compact color monitor displays easy-to-read information in a variety of languages. Main monitor functions include: One-touch selection of favorite functions with five programmable “Quick Access” buttons. Display of maintenance interval alerts. Selection of as many as 10 predefined hydraulic work tools through the Tool Control function. Selection of three levels of travel motor deceleration when releasing the travel pedal with adjustable braking. Activation of rear view camera through the monitor menu. The optional camera is mounted on the counterweight for excellent visibility to the rear of the machine.

New Deluxe Seat

Heated Mirrors The M318D provides various mirror arrangements depending on the selected style of boom. Heated mirrors are also available to ensure safe operation in colder climates.

Windshield Three front windshield options are available, two retractable and a one-piece windshield. The 6 mm, retractable windshields are completely removable, and the 10 mm laminated, one-piece windshield is fixed and impact resistant.

Skylight A transparent polycarbonate skylight delivers excellent upward visibility and natural light. A retractable sunscreen blocks the direct sunlight from the skylight and the front windshield.

Rear View Camera An optional rear view camera is available to increase job site safety and operator comfort. When activated, an in-cab color monitor provides an excellent line of sight behind the machine through the machine monitor.

Wipers The parallel wiper system maximizes visibility in poor weather conditions. The wiper covers almost the entire front windshield, keeping the operator’s immediate line of sight clear.

		Booms and Sticks Caterpillar excavator booms and sticks are built for performance and long service life. The box section design provides the strength needed for even the toughest applications. Multiple boom and stick options allow you to pick the best match for your job.

		Sticks Four different stick lengths are offered to match different application requirements: Short stick (2.2 m/7 ft 3 in) for maximum breakout force and lifting capability. Booms Two booms are available for the M318D, the most popular of which is the Variable Adjustable, or VA, boom. The VA boom offers excellent right side visibility and machine roading balance. When working in tight quarters or lifting heavy loads, the VA boom offers the most flexibility. The one-piece boom fits most standard applications, such as truck loading and digging. A unique straight section in the curve of the side plate reduces stress flow and helps increase boom life.

Machine Security An optional Machine Security System is available from the factory. This system controls who can operate the machine when, and utilizes specific keys to prevent unauthorized machine use.

Air Filters A new type of air filter has been implemented into the D-Series. This filter has an improved seal, preventing intake air from bypassing the filter, and is constantly monitored for optimum performance. If airflow becomes restricted, a warning is displayed on the in cab monitor.

Cat Electronics Caterpillar braided harnesses, color codings and number codings make maintenance easy. The thicker insulation of the wires and braided harness provides a higher temperature range. The Deutsch connectors prevent water from contaminating the electrical wire connections. The entire electronic system has been simplified for easier diagnostics and repair. Monitoring System The monitoring system provides three warning categories. The first warning category requires only operator awareness. This type of warning is indicated by a message on the display screen. The second warning category requires a change to the machine operation or a change to the maintenance of the machine. This type of warning is indicated by a message on the display screen and the Alert Indicator blinking. The third warning category requires immediate shutdown of the engine. This type of warning is indicated by a message on the display screen, the Alert Indicator blinking, and a buzzer. If multiple warnings are present in the system, the most important problem is shown first. Pressing the up or down key to view all warnings that are present in the machine. If no keys are pressed within five seconds, the display will return to the most important problem.

Auto-Lube The automatic lubrication system automatically lubricates all upper-structure bearings of the machine to their optimum level. This optimizes serviceability and maximum lubricating efficiency. The automatic lubrication system has an electric pump that greases the bearings through non-corrosive grease lines. The pump and the grease tank are located under the steps of the upper carriage access. The following points on the machine are lubricated by the auto lube system: stick bearing, lower boom bearing, boom cylinder head end, boom cylinder rod end, stick cylinder head end, stick cylinder rod end, stick to boom linkage, work tool cylinder head end, work tool cylinder rod end, stick nose. The lubrication interval can be adjusted through the monitor, and status messages for the auto-lube system are displayed on the monitor.

Remote Greasing For hard to reach locations, greasing blocks have been provided to reduce maintenance time. One block is located in the engine compartment with two grease points for the swing bearing and another to lubricate the boom and stick. The undercarriage has as many as two remote blocks; one provides lubricates the oscillating axle, and the second, if the dozer blade is equipped, is located on the side left side of the dozer blade and lubricates the entire dozer assemble.

Cat XT™-6 ES Hoses Premium quality rubber, precision 4-ply wire reinforcement and exclusive reusable couplings are all unique features that deliver top performance and long life.

Hydraulic Snubbers Caterpillar integrates cylinder snubber technology into all Wheel Excavator boom, stick and bucket cylinders. These snubbers help cushion shocks, reduce sound and increase cylinder life.

Design Caterpillar Booms and sticks are of welded box section structures with thick, multi-plate fabrications in high stress areas, for rugged performance and long service life.

Cleanable ATAAC and AC Condenser The AC condenser tilts upward for easy cleaning and maintenance access. This also allows the technician excellent exposure to the ATAAC cooler.

Cooling System An electronically controlled, hydraulic motor drives a variable speed on-demand fan for engine coolant and hydraulic oil. The optimum fan speed is based on coolant and hydraulic oil temperature, resulting in reduced fuel consumption and lower sound levels. The electronic engine control continuously compensates for the varying fan load, providing consistent net power, regardless of operating conditions.

Product Link Product Link can assist with Fleet Management to keep track of hours, location, security and product health. The machine is prewired to accept Product Link systems to be installed in the field. Product Link is also available as a factory installed attachment.

Waste Handling Package The Waste Handling Package has been specifically developed for Cat Wheel Excavators working in waste transfer stations or other extremely dusty applications. This option features the following: An automatic, hydraulic reversible fan that reverses airflow after a set interval, manually adjustable between five and 60 minutes with a switch located inside the cab. A special dense wire mesh cooling system hood further reduces radiator clogging. Two cyclone filters provide clean filtered air to the engine compartment, air cleaner, aftercooler and air conditioner condenser.

		Serviceability For increased safety, all daily maintenance points are accessible from ground level. A centralized greasing system allows lubrication of critical points.

Ground Level Maintenance As with the C-Series, Caterpillar designed the D-Series wheel excavators with the operator and service technician in mind. Gull-wing doors, with pneumatically assisted lift cylinders, lift easily allowing critical maintenance to be performed quickly and efficiently while maintaining operator safety. All daily service points can be accessed from the ground and within the engine compartment. The C6.6 engine, and hydraulic pumps are longitudinally mounted, increasing ease of maintenance and service.

Extended Service Intervals The D-Series Wheel Excavator service and maintenance intervals have been extended to reduce machine service time, increase machine availability and reduce operating costs. Using S•O•SSM Scheduled Oil Sampling analysis, hydraulic oil change intervals can be extended up to 4,000 hours. Engine coolant change intervals are 12,000 hours with Cat Extended Life Coolant.

Self-Monitoring System with Auto-Diagnostics The electronic engine and machine controllers provide detailed diagnostic capability for the service technicians. The ability to store active and intermittent indicators simplifies problem diagnosis and reduces total repair time, resulting in improved machine availability and lower operating cost. 		Front Compartment The front compartment hood can be opened vertically, providing outstanding ground level access to the batteries, air-to-air after cooler, air conditioner condenser and the air cleaner filter.

Fuel Filters Cat high efficiency fuel filters with a Stay-Clean Valve™ features a special media that removes more than 98 percent of particles, increasing fuel injector life. Both the primary and secondary fuel filters are located in the engine compartment and can be easily changed from ground level.

		New Auto-Lube System

Scheduled Oil Sampling Caterpillar has specially developed S•O•SSM Oil Sampling Analysis to help ensure better performance, longer life and increased customer satisfaction. This thorough and reliable early warning system detects traces of metals, dirt and other contaminants in your engine, axle and hydraulic oil. It can predict potential trouble avoiding costly failures. Your Caterpillar dealer can give you results and specific recommendations shortly after receiving your sample. Each test can provide specific types of diagnosis: Oil condition analysis identifies loss of lubricating properties by quantifying combustion products such as soot, sulfur, oxidation and nitrates. Wear analysis monitors component wear by detecting, identifying and assessing the amount and type of metal wear elements found in the oil. Chemical and physical test detect the physical presence of unwanted fluids (water, fuel, antifreeze).

Engine Oil Caterpillar engine oil is formulated to optimize engine life and performance. The specially formulated oil is more cost effective and increases engine oil change interval to 500 hours, providing industry leading performance and savings.

Maintenance Free Batteries Caterpillar’s maintenance free batteries increase up time and decrease your maintenance time.

Water Separator The D Series is equipped with a primary fuel filter with water separator located in the engine compartment. For ease of service, the water separator can be easily accessed from ground level.

		New LED Rear Lights Optional Light Emitting Diode (LED) Rear Lights replace the standard lights, for increased visibility on the job site, higher durability and longer life.

Handrails and Steps Large handrails and steps assist the operator in climbing on and off the machine.

		Storage Box

		Anti-Skid Plate The surface of the upper structure is covered with an anti-skid surface, which helps prevent slipping during maintenance or servicing. The steps leading to the cab also uses this same design.

Laminated Windshield The windshield is made of a double-layer laminated glass. This laminated windshield reduces the possibility of the operator being injured by sharp glass fragment in case of an accident.

Tiltable Left Console The left console raises for easy access to the cab. While the console is in the raised position the machine’s hydraulics are disabled for safety. The console must also be raised to start the machine.

Battery Disconnects Located in the right side engine compartment the battery disconnect main responsibility is to disable the machine for service reasons.

Yellow Braid Wiring Like other Cat hydraulic excavators, the Cat M318D also uses yellow braid, which is fireproof and heat resistant, to protect the electrical wiring that runs through the engine compartment.

Full Fan Guard The fan guard is made of heavy-duty steel and covers the radiator fan over its entirety. This minimizes potential danger to the operator while performing maintenance or service in that area of the excavator.

Adjustable Travel Alarm An adjustable travel alarm is available to warn people when the machine is moving. Three settings can be selected through the monitor: Auto mode - Alarm will stop sounding immediately when the machine is no longer traveling, or has been sounding for an uninterrupted 10-second interval. Standard mode - Alarm operates constantly during moving, with only manual cancellation. Off mode - Travel Alarm is disabled.

Fenders The optional fenders provide excellent coverage of the front and rear tires, protecting the machine from mud and dirt. Water cannot splash on the windscreen or cooler. The fenders further protect the machine from stones and debris being thrown up by the tires, providing additional safety for the machine, other vehicles and personnel working close to the excavator.

Falling Objects Guard The optional falling objects guard is an essential piece of equipment for machines working in harsh environments such as demolition, forestry, etc. This system helps protect the operator and the front windshield and the top skylight.

Vandalism Guard The optional vandalism guard is to be used only when the machine is not in operation and protects the front windshield from damage.

		Environmentally Responsible Design Helping to protect our environment, the engine has low operator and spectator sound levels, longer filter change intervals and is more fuel-efficient.

Fuel Efficiency The D-Series Wheel Excavators are designed for outstanding performance with high fuel efficiency. This means more work done in a day, less fuel consumed and minimal impact on the environment.

Low Exhaust Emissions The U.S. EPA Tier 3 compliant Cat C6.6 offers increased performance and reliability while reducing fuel consumption and sound levels.

Quiet Operation The noise levels inside and outside the cab are extremely low. As a result of the new variable speed fan and remote cooling system all machines meet the German Blue Angel award for low sound operation.

Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil The optional biodegradable hydraulic oil (HEES™) is formulated to provide excellent high-pressure and high-temperature characteristics, and is fully compatible with the all-hydraulic components. HEES is fully decomposed by soil or water microorganisms, providing a more environmentally sound alternative to mineral-based oils.

Fewer Leaks and Spills Lubricant fillers and drains are designed to minimize spills. Cat O-Ring Face Seals, Cat XT™ Hose and hydraulic cylinders are all designed to help prevent fluid leaks that can reduce the machine performance and cause harm to the environment.

Longer Service Intervals Working closely with your Caterpillar Dealer can help extend service intervals for engine oil, hydraulic oil, axle oil and coolant, which means fewer required fluids, fewer disposals and lower operating costs.
