Performance
The 914G uses a Caterpillar power train for reliable, long life. The Cat 3054C DIT engine with Cat hystat transmission is performance-matched for smooth performance and operator comfort.
Caterpillar Engine
For added service life, the 3054C DIT engine is a 4-cylinder, water-cooled, direct injection engine and has many rebuild features such as field-replaceable cylinder liners and replaceable valve guides and seats.
Cylinder Block
Dry cylinder liners provide excellent oil control and are supported their entire length for extra rigidity, reducing distortion and the related stress on pistons, pins and rings. The 3054C DIT uses a one-piece cast iron cylinder head with two valves per cylinder. The cylinder head features replaceable valve guides and seats for ease of rebuild. Oil seals are standard for both intake and exhaust valves. Valves are made of alloy steel.
Steel Crankshaft
The wide bearings spread the firing loads across a larger film area, reducing stress and wear on the bearings. This helps extend service life and helps guard against bearing failure.
Pistons
The top ring is a Ni-Resist band. The piston pin is full-floating and 38 mm (1.5 in.) in diameter. The piston pin is lubricated by oil from the oil cooling jets. A lubrication hole drilled in the top of the piston pin directs oil to the pin bushing. The front gear train on the 3054C DIT uses steel helical gears that ensure precise fuel pump timing for optimum economy and performance. The helical gears also help gear train noise. Like larger diesel engines, the connecting rod of the 3054T has a larger piston bearing surface (angle-cut pin end design) for the power stroke. This spreads the larger firing loads across a greater area to reduce stress on both the piston and the pin.
Oil Pump
The 3054C has an oil cooler mounted next to the oil filter. An oil pressure by-pass valve diverts oil around the cooler during cold starts, helping to insure an adequate supply of oil to the main bearings and turbo at startup. The oil filter is a Caterpillar spin-on type and is located on the left side of the engine with the flange-side up to reduce the chance of spilling oil when servicing. The filter is within easy reach.
Fuel Pump and Fuel Filter
The fuel pump features a built-in automatic advance and all-speed governing capability. The injectors are carefully matched to the fuel system for good fuel economy. Both a fuel-priming pump and a fuel/water separator are standard equipment on the 3054C. These features simplify fuel system maintenance and are extra-cost options on many other engines.
Water Pump
Another large-engine feature of the 3054C is a gear-driven water pump. By being gear-driven, the engine's cooling system is not dependent on belts that can break and disable the engine. A single thermostat is used for protection against overheating.
Starting System
The 3054C engine has a direct electric 24V starting and charging system with two heavy-duty 12V 900 CCA Caterpillar batteries and 80A alternator. A glow plug starting aid is standard for improved starting in extremely cold temperatures.
Hystat Power Train
Cat 3054C DIT diesel engine provides reliable power and very low exhaust emissions with a highly responsive hydrostatic transmission, exceptional machine balance and easier serviceability than ever before.
Low Emission, Tier 2 Engine
The standard 3054C DIT is a very low emission engine designed to meet today's Tier 2 environmental emission standards. It is one of the cleanest burning engines in it's class.
Hydrostatic Transmission
The Cat hydrostatic power train provides dependable and smooth operation with a single lever control for easy and precise control of direction changes. An inching function allows momentary travel speed as low as zero with full engine rpm. An optional remote transmission control adds a forward/neutral/reverse switch on the implement lever and directional indicators on the instrument cluster. In order to limit maximum travel speed while maintaining high engine rpm and hydraulic speed for applications such as truck loading, a rabbit/turtle (HIGH/LOW) switch is provided.
Axles
Heavy-duty design features strong gears and bearings for durable performance. Oscillating rear axle helps assure four-wheel ground contact for optimum traction and stability. The Caterpillar axle is adjustment-free and fully enclosed with sealed brakes. The enclosed design allows extended operation even in the harshest environments.
Duo-Cone Seals on Axles
Patented Duo-Cone Seals on the axle and housing keep oil in and lock contaminants out. Patented Duo-Cone Seals help prevent contamination of internal components.
Differentials
A conventional differential is standard on both front and rear axles, which provides the lowest cost operation and optimum four-wheel drive performance in good, dry underfoot conditions. Optional Limited Slip Differentials (LSD) are available on front or rear axles. LSD's automatically compensate for slip and spin on uneven floors and in changing conditions by transferring torque to the wheel with better underfoot traction.
Final Drives
Ring gears are pressed in and doweled into axle housing. Carrier assemblies include planet gears with full-floating bronze sleeve bearings. High contact ratio gearset reduces noise levels during meshing. Planetary reduction gears are inboard mounted for optimal protection and durability.
Fixed Front, Oscillating Rear Axle
The fixed front, oscillating rear axle (±11 degrees) ensures four-wheel ground contact for optimum traction and stability. The front axle is rigidly mounted to the front loader frame. The rear axle has an oscillation trunnion that allows the rear wheel to raise or drop a total of 350 mm (13.8 inches). The rear axle also has a remote trunnion lubrication fitting to simplify maintenance.
Disc Brakes
The brakes include a dual pedal, low-effort hydraulic braking system. Inboard oil-immersed disc brakes on front and rear axles are standard.
Parking Brakes
Parking brake features include the following:
  • Mechanical, shoe-type brake
  • Mounted on drive line for positive manual operation
  • Transmission is automatically neutralized when parking brake is applied

Personal storage areas include places to store a lunch box, thermos, cup, coat rack and a lockable storage area.
Low-Effort Operation
A remote transmission control option adds a forward/neutral/reverse control switch on the implement lever for easier operation and enhanced productivity. Hydrostatic, closed-center steering system with flow amplification provides fast or slow steering response, depending on the operational requirement. The standard control package features pilot hydraulic controls including a two-function wobble stick for lift and tilt control. There are electric detents for the lift functions for raise and float, and for tilt functions for rackback/return to dig.
Steering System
The adjustable steering console lifts easily out of the way. Dual suspended brake pedals function as a brake and a transmission neutralizer so the operator can maintain high engine RPM for full hydraulic flow and fast cycle times.
