Operator Station
Operator comfort and ease of operation are designed into the operator's station from every aspect, including ergonomic features such as low-effort joystick controls and an adjustable contoured seat.
Low Effort Machine Controls
Ergonomic, pilot hydraulic controls give operators precision control of the Cat Multi Terrain Loader with minimal effort. The right joystick controls loader up/down and tilt control, and the left joystick controls forward and reverse travel speed plus direction. Both joysticks use an intuitive “S” control pattern. Deluxe joysticks now provide more auxiliary controls than before using positive-action buttons to provide precision fingertip control of many machine functions.
Cab Conveniences
Side, sliding windows offer protection from the elements, and allow fresh air ventilation. They can be removed using new quick release latches and are easier to clean. All machines equipped with a cab door have an electrical loader lockout switch that is designed to disable the loader arms while the cab door is open to prevent accidental damage. A 12-volt DC power socket is also included.
High-Efficiency Climate Controls
A high performance air conditioner will keep the operator cool when ambient temperatures rise by providing 13,500 BTUs. Conveniently located next to the operator (current location of heater) the unit supplies direct airflow through six, large, precisely positioned air vents. Customers can purchase the combination heater/air conditioner unit in one package or add A/C later if the machine is equipped with a heater.
Instrumentation
Cat Multi Terrain Loader instrument panels and gauges are simple, easy to use and reliable. The updated, bright indicator lights and audible warnings signal any critical system situation. Positive feel switches, with status lights, control most on/off functions. An engine air cleaner restriction indicator is now in the cab for easier monitoring.
Visibility
The wide MTL cab opening and 25 percent more glass help provide an exceptional view of the work tool for the operator. The sloped angle of the engine compartment offers excellent visibility to the rear of the machine, while a new, standard convex rearview mirror gives the operator a panoramic view of the machine’s rear and sides. In addition for even better visibility in low-light conditions, the standard forward lights are now adjustable 10 degrees in any direction.
Access/Egress
The uncluttered cab floor gives the operator more leg room and helps make getting in and out of the cab easier, along with the wide opening with three point grab irons and skid-resistant steps. The tilt cylinders are located under the lift arms so they do not interfere with operator access and egress.
Cab Packages
Several cab packages and options are available. The standard cab offers features such as an adjustable contoured seat, cushioned arm bar, dual throttle controls, pilot operated joysticks, 12-volt DC power socket and optional cup holder. A new Merchandising Arrangement is available in the Price List that includes an enclosed cab and air conditioning.
Rubber Track Undercarriage
The unique rubber track undercarriage provides exceptional flotation, traction and stability with minimal pressure on the ground.
Rubber Track Undercarriage
The rubber track undercarriage transfers machine weight to the ground through 24 wheeled contact points. Machine weight is evenly distributed throughout the track.
  • Traction is dramatically increased
  • Low ground pressure and high flotation keep the machine working in soft or wet underfoot conditions
  • Track tread designed to provide optimal gripping traction while preventing surface damage
  • Track life is increased and track guiding is improved
  • Ideal for applications where soil compaction should be avoided
Large Contact Area
The large ground contact area helps maximize traction and minimize ground pressure. Tracks measure 381 mm (15 in) wide. Length of the track on ground measures 1499 mm (59 in).
Positive Track Drive
The elevated, internal positive track drive keeps drive components away from ground debris. The sprocket is fitted with replaceable roller sleeves that mesh with molded rubber lugs inside the track for smooth operation. Track lugs travel on the outer edge of the undercarriage roller wheels to ensure proper tracking and to help prevent derailment.
Durable Rubber Track
The rugged, durable rubber track is lightweight and pliable, yet reinforced with high tensile strength cords. Track edges are beveled to help prevent scuffing or damage when maneuvering on sod, turf and other sensitive surfaces. No steel is used in the track to eliminate excess weight and prevent corrosion.
Torsion Axles
Heavy-duty torsion axles suspend each side of the undercarriage from the machine frame. These axles absorb most of the shock to the undercarriage, machine and operator - especially over rough conditions. This provides smooth travel even at high speeds. It also leads to better load retention and higher productivity.
Heavy Duty Metal Face Seals
Steel Rear Idlers
High Performance Power Train
The Cat C2.2 T engine provides high engine horsepower and torque, allowing part-throttle operation for lower sound levels and lower fuel consumption. Anti-stall feature maximizes power to the drive train and work tools without stalling the engine.
Cat Diesel Power
The four cylinder, 2.2 L (134 in3) C2.2 T engine is water-cooled and known for its exceptional reliability and durability. This rugged, reliable, four cylinder engine offers aggressive performance and a fast torque curve for quick response. It is also a low emission engine and is Interim Tier 4 compliant.
Dual Engine Throttle Controls
The foot operated throttle lets the operator vary engine speed and minimize fuel consumption, having more power when needed while providing more control over the machine, for tasks like load and carry, truck loading, grading and dozing. The hand operated throttle allows the operator to run at a constant speed, which is ideal for jobs such as cold planing, trenching or snow blowing.
Anti-Stall Feature
The anti-stall device is incorporated into the drive train to deliver maximum power to the wheels and work tool of the Cat Multi Terrain Loader. Caterpillar machines automatically reduce the displacement of the drive pumps when driving into a pile. This minimizes engine stalling while maintaining torque to the wheels at a reduced speed to get the job done quickly and smoothly.
Closed-Loop, High Output Hydrostatic System
The dual, closed-loop, axial piston hydrostatic pumps are driven directly off the engine. The pumps provide pressure and flow to two fixed displacement motors that power the final drive motors, driving the tracks. No chains are used.
Cold Starting Aid
Fast start glow plugs assist in cold temperature starting to -32 degrees C (-25 degrees F), eliminating the need for an ether starting aid. Heater blocks are also available.
Advanced Hydraulic System
The hydraulic system in the Cat Multi Terrain Loader is designed for maximum power and reliability. More hydraulic power means better overall performance. Fewer components mean fewer hydraulic connections and reduced chance of leaks.
Power and Reliability
Maximum power and reliability are built into the Cat Multi Terrain Loader hydraulic system. In addition to providing power to drive the wheels, this system also provides the loader lift and tilt functions, powers the auxiliary circuit to drive work tools and drives the engine-cooling fan.
Hydraulic Pumps
The hydraulic pumps are driven off the engine for maximum hydraulic performance and reliability - no belts are used. Pumps are fixed-displacement and provide 60 L/min (15.6 gal/min) at high idle. Maximum system pressure for the loader and auxiliary circuit is 23 000 kPa (3,335 psi). Control of the loader lift and tilt functions is by hydraulically-operated joystick controls for low effort and precise operation.
Auxiliary Hydraulics
Standard auxiliary hydraulics to power work tools is available through quick connect hydraulic couplings that are rigidly mounted to the loader arm. The Caterpillar line of high pressure XT™ ES and ToughGuard™ hoses as well as O-ring face seals help assure a leak-free system.
Reliability and Cleanliness
Single components, used in place of multiple components, such as the monoblock hydraulic valve and monoblock pumps, help improve machine reliability and cleanliness. Line routings are improved to reduce connection points, which greatly reduce the opportunity for leaks to develop. The Caterpillar line of high pressure XT™ ES hoses and O-ring face seals help ensure a leak-free system. A 74-micron screen in the hydraulic tank prevents larger debris from entering the system and causing damage to hydraulic components. A filter restriction indicator is located in the upper right instrument panel.
Hydraulic Oil Cooler
A high-efficiency, hydraulic oil cooler lets the Cat Multi Terrain Loader work longer and harder in higher ambient temperatures, even when using continuous flow work tools. The high capacity, hydraulic oil reservoir contains an anti-cavitation loop that is designed to purge the returning oil of air before entering the suction line. This extends component life by reducing the possibility of cavitation, which can cause damage to cylinders and rods. In addition, because of the high capacity of the hydraulic oil reservoir, it has the added benefit of helping to lower hydraulic oil temperature.
Structures
The Caterpillar Multi Terrain Loader heavy duty structures are engineered for years of use in extreme applications.
Main Frame
The MTL main frame consists of two fully welded, heavy duty structures, the upper frame and lower frame. Weld bosses and links are used throughout the frames and provide chafe-free attachment points for hydraulic tubes, hoses and electrical wiring harnesses to prevent damage.
Lower Main Frame
The lower frame has an internal fuel tank incorporated into the design that is protected from external damage. A removable section has been placed in the floor of the lower frame for cleaning ease.
Upper Main Frame and Lift Arms
Careful attention was given to the placement of components within the frame for favorable weight distribution. The upper frame forms the loader towers and fenders and serves as the attachment point for the rear-tilting cab and tilt-up cooling package. The loader lift arms allow for an excellent viewing area to the work tool. The lift arms also protect the tilt cylinders and associated hydraulic lines and facilitate cab access and egress. The loader arms are designed to handle heavy loads without twisting and bending.
Loader Linkage
The radial lift linkage is the most durably designed structure in the industry. Engineered for years of use in the most extreme applications, radial machines have proven to be the longest lasting frames in any situation. From crushing through deep cement with a hammer to breaking through hard clay, these loader arms are designed to take on the more aggressive applications with ease and maximum reach at eye level.
Rear Structures
The rear door, which now opens on the right hand side, and the upper engine enclosure is made of thick gauge steel to protect the back of the Multi Terrain Loader from impact damage and to house the taillights. The bumper is made up of fabricated sections and incorporates two conveniently located tie-down points for transporting the machine. The bumper sits slightly outward from the rear door to protect the body of the machine from dents and scratches to help increase the machine’s resale value.
E-Coat Protection
All chassis and cab components are corrosion protected using a process called electro-depositioned paint or “e-coat”. This method is used throughout the automotive industry as a way of providing superior rust prevention and long life. An acrylic topcoat is then applied before the components are assembled on the line for additional protection and durability.
Quick Coupler and Cat Work Tools
A universal work tool interface and quick coupler help make the Cat Multi Terrain Loader the most versatile machine on the job site. Add the wide range of performance-matched Cat Work Tools for maximum utility and production.
Quick Coupler
Cat Multi Terrain Loaders are equipped with a standard mechanical quick coupler that connects with over thirty different categories of Caterpillar Work Tools. The coupler is a box-section, fabricated design that provides increased strength and decreased weight. An optional hydraulic quick coupler allows the operator to engage and disengage the work tool without having to exit the machine. A rocker switch on the left instrument panel enables complete control of the engagement pins. The switch controls two hydraulic cylinders that replace manual handles on the coupler, allowing the vertical chrome wedge pins to be raised and lowered. This option increases productivity since work tool changes are quicker and easier.
