Structures, Drawbar, Circle and Moldboard
The 120M frame provides a solid working platform, and the DCM delivers service ease and precise blade control for maximum productivity.
Front Frame Structure
The 120M front frame is a formed structural carbon steel tube. Advanced fabrication technology uses a single steel plate that is formed into shape and resistance welded, producing a robust tube. Evenly distributing stress loads increases durability of the frame. This process will also significantly reduce weld joints that, in turn, increase durability and factory throughput.
Rear Frame Structure
The box-sectioned hitch design helps resist torsion loads and ensure structural durability. The cast axle mounting supports the rear axle, utilizing a bolt-on design for increased serviceability. The box-sectioned channels connect to the integrated bumper, tying the rear frame together as one unit so the frame can withstand heavy-duty applications such as ripping and winging snow.
Articulation Hitch
A large tapered roller bearing at the lower pivot carries loads evenly and smoothly. This joint is sealed to prevent contamination in this critical area. A mechanical locking pin prevents frame articulation to ensure safety when servicing or transporting the machine.
Circle Construction
Caterpillar circles are rolled ringed seamless steel forgings built to stand up to high stress loads and provide structural durability. The uniformly spaced circle teeth are flame cut for accurate positioning and smooth finishing on the working surfaces. The front 240° of circle teeth are heat induction hardened to reduce wear and ensure component reliability. For maximum support, the circle is secured to the drawbar by six circle support shoes. The raised wear surface area on top of the circle extends the component life of the circle and drawbar.
Drawbar Construction
The A-frame drawbar uses a tubular design for high strength and optimum durability. A 20 mm (.8 in) “yoke” plate has been added for additional strength that extends from the circle area to the front of the drawbar.
Aggressive Blade Angle
The Caterpillar M-Series features a long wheelbase that provides space to quickly position the blade at an aggressive angle without interfering with front or rear tires. The aggressive angle keeps the material rolling along the moldboard. This versatility prevents an undesirable bulldozing effect and ultimately requires less power to get the job done. This is particularly helpful when handling very dry materials or cohesive soils.
Top-Adjust Drawbar Wear Strips
The patented top-adjust wear strips dramatically reduce drawbar/circle adjustment time. By removing the access plates on top of the drawbar, shims and wear strips can easily be added or replaced by a single technician, without removing the circle. Covering the same surface area as the H-Series machines, the 20 mm (.78 in) thick wear inserts are designed for extended life. This feature cuts service downtime and lowers the overall machine operating costs for customers.
Replaceable Wear Inserts
Tough, durable nylon composite wear inserts reduce rotational friction for maximum circle torque and longer component life. They are located between the drawbar and circle, and between the support shoes and circle. High load-resistant brass wear strips are placed between the blade mounting group and moldboard. This sacrificial wear system can be replaced easily and helps keep components tight for fine grading.
Shimless Moldboard Retention System
The unique, shimless moldboard retention system reduces the potential for blade chatter. Vertical and horizontal adjusting screws keep the moldboard’s wear strips aligned for precise blade control and dramatic reductions in service time.
Moldboard
The optimal curvature and large throat clearance help move material quickly and efficiently in all soil types. These features, in addition to maintaining the proven H-series moldboard surface area and blade curvature, give the 14M excellent load distribution and minimal material buildup into the circle area while allowing large blade loads to roll freely. Heat-treated moldboard rails, hardened cutting edges and end bits, and large diameter bolts assure reliability and longer service life. The moldboard side shift rails are welded to the moldboard using a uniform continuous submerged arc welding technique for superior strength. The side shift cylinder is positioned on the left side to eliminate snow wing interference.
Moldboard Positioning
The five-hole link bar design extends the possibilities for moldboard positioning and is most beneficial in mid-range bank sloping and in ditch cutting and cleaning. During mid-range bank sloping, the machine can remain on the ground and off the slope. In ditching applications, the blade can reach far out and down, which keeps the machine on a dry, level surface. This results in a high production potential.
Power Train
An electronically controlled power shift transmission assures smooth shifting and maximum power to the ground. A modular rear axle and hydraulic brakes simplify serviceability and reduce operating costs.
Smooth Shifting Transmission
The 120M combines several key innovations to ensure smooth, powerful shifts throughout the gear range.
Electronically Controlled Shifting
The full Electronic Clutch Pressure Control (ECPC) system optimizes inching modulation and smooths shifting between all gears and directional changes. This is performed by electronically controlling shifts at the correct time and modulating the engagement of the clutches. ECPC provides outstanding control and also extends the life of the transmission by placing less stress on transmission gearing while reducing operator fatigue.
Load Compensation
This standard feature ensures consistent shift quality regardless of blade or machine load. Electronic Control Modules (ECMs) process input from the engine and estimate the load on transmission to automatically adjust the clutch engagement rate. Load compensation protects the clutch and ensures smooth shifts.
Viscosity Compensation
This oil selection feature allows the machine to take into account varying oil weights for consistent hydraulic performance. The calibration is fully integrated into the machine and can be performed using Cat Messenger. It allows the operator to select oil weight for optimized shift performance. At extreme cold temperatures, this feature pre-primes the clutches for optimum operation.
Controlled Throttle Shifting
This standard feature helps to smooth directional and gear changes without use of the inching pedal by momentarily reducing engine speed for optimal shift points for directional changes and some key forward gear changes. The advantages of controlled throttle shifting (CTS) include improved shift quality, controlled clutch friction and heat generation during the shift, dampening of any torque reaction at the spring coupling between the engine and transmission, reduced operator fatigue and less affected worked-ground conditions. The introduction of CTS places the M-Series Motor Grader as the market leader in transmission shift quality.
Shuttle Shifts (Directional Shifts)
The M-Series transmission allows direction changes without using the inching pedal to control clutch engagement. Designed with electronically controlled proportional valves and an advanced shift control strategy, the M-Series transmission precisely controls the engagement of the directional clutches for a very smooth transition from one direction to the other. This new type of shift is called the 'shuttle shift.' The transmission can perform shuttle shifts up to 3rd gear. For example, if the operator was travelling in 2nd Forward gear, a flip of the direction index trigger will move the transmission into the 2nd Reverse gear. The same applies to 1st gear and 3rd gear, respectively. If the operator is travelling in a gear greater than 3rd and requests a shuttle shift, the transmission shift control logic will automatically downshift the transmission from the current gear to 3rd and perform a 3-to-3 shuttle shift. Additional shuttle shifts can be performed under more advanced operator input conditions.
Engine Over-Speed Protection
Electronic over-speed protection helps prevent engine and transmission damage, and extends component life caused by premature downshifting or grade-induced over-speeding. The electronic controller will prevent a downshift from occurring until the engine has slowed to 2600 RPM. The transmission will automatically up-shift if the machine speed increases beyond the capability of the selected gear between 1st and 7th gear forward.
Power Shift Countershaft Transmission
Designed and manufactured specifically for the 120M motor grader, the direct drive countershaft transmission is matched with the powerful Cat C6.6 engine to maximize power to the ground.
Direct Drive
Delivers superior fuel efficiency and “feel” of blade loads, material hardness and ground speed.
Modular Rear Axle
The 120M incorporates a bolt-on modular rear axle design, allowing easy access to differential components, improving serviceability and contamination control, and lowering maintenance time and operating costs.
Front Axle
The Caterpillar® sealed spindle keeps the bearings free from contaminants and lubricated in a light-weight oil (1). This durable low maintenance design reduces the customer’s owning and operating costs because repacking with grease is never required. Two tapered roller bearings (2) support the wheel spindle. The Cat “Live Spindle” design places the larger tapered roller bearing outboard where the load is greater, extending bearing life.
Gear Selection
Eight forward and six reverse gears give the operator a wide operating range. The specifically designed range of gears ensures maximum productivity in all earthmoving applications.
Inching Pedal
The robust pedal allows precise control of the machine with low pedal effort and superior modulation. The electronic control module (ECPC), which controls the transmission, allows optimum inching modulation for each specific gear, providing the operator better control and feel when inching is needed. No inching pedal is required for directional or gear changes. Precise control of machine movements is especially important in finish grading or other close-quarter work.
Programmable Autoshift
The optional autoshift allows the operator to easily customize various shift parameters through Cat Messenger to match the specific application requirement. The operator can select a specific range of gears to work in so that the machine will automatically shift the transmission at optimal points. This allows the operator to focus on the work, improving safety, productivity and ease of operation.
Hydraulic Brakes
Caterpillar designs and manufactures oil-bathed, hydraulically actuated (1), multi-disc brakes that are completely sealed. These provide smooth, predictable braking and lower operating costs. With the largest total brake surface area in the industry (2) of 5750 cm˛ (891 in˛), the 120M delivers dependable stopping power and longer brake life.
Brake Serviceability and Reliability
A brake wear indicator/compensator system (3) maintains consistent brake performance and indicates brake wear without disassembly. This system is located on the wheel housing behind the tires. The customer can adjust the stop rod to allow consistent brake piston travel as the frictional material wears, and also check remaining life at the same time. The system's integrated functions cut service time and extend brake service life.
Parking Brake
The spring-applied, hydraulically released multi-disc parking brake is automatically engaged with the operator presence system, and can be easily serviced without transmission removal to reduce operating cost. A sealed, oil-cooled design extends component life and reduces the need for service.
Engine
The Cat C6.6 engine combines power management with ACERT™ Technology to deliver maximum power and efficiency in every gear while reducing the environmental impact.
Exhaust Emissions Compliant
Illustrating the Cat commitment to environmental responsibility, the M-Series ACERT Technology engine operates in a clean and quiet way. With reductions in NOx, hydrocarbon and particulate emissions, it meets or exceeds U.S. EPA Tier 3 and European Union Stage IIIa standards. Caterpillar engines with ACERT Technology can meet exhaust emissions regulations without using ultra-low sulphur diesel (15 parts per million). The M-Series machines can use the same fuel as the H-Series (500 parts per million) without sacrificing engine life.
ACERT™ Technology
ACERT Technology represents a series of revolutionary and incremental improvements developed by Caterpillar that reduces emissions at the source. It is sometimes easier to think of ACERT Technology as a series of building blocks used by Caterpillar to optimize engine performance while meeting U.S. EPA Tier 3 and European Stage IIIa regulations. This breakthrough technology reduces combustion temperatures and emissions during the combustion process by using advanced technology in the air and fuel systems, in conjunction with integrated electronics. The electronically controlled fuel system allows for multiple injections of small amounts of fuel in each combustion cycle, allowing for more complete fuel burn and in turn reducing combustion temperatures. Combining this with an advanced air system provides more cool air in the combustion chamber and controls the air volume required at various loads and speeds. It automatically adjusts to the requirements of the engine at any particular time, providing optimum power and fuel economy, while reducing emissions with continued durability and improved performance. The C9 engine features a water-cooled center-section, waste-gated turbocharger. The turbocharger has a Titanium compression wheel for increased turbo life and reliability. This wheel spins at extreme speeds, especially in high altitudes. The Titanium compression wheel can withstand these high-spin conditions with much better wear characteristics.
Fuel Delivery
One of the breakthroughs of ACERT Technology is the concept of multiple injection fuel delivery. This process involves a high degree of precision as the combustion process grows in complexity with changing engine speeds and load demands. One key benefit of multiple injection technology is lower combustion chamber temperatures that in turn generate fewer emissions. In precisely shaping the combustion cycle, Caterpillar is also optimizing fuel combustion, further reducing emissions output while giving customers more work for their fuel expense.
Electronic Control
Caterpillar has been electronically controlling its engines since the middle 1980s. The culmination of this pioneering spirit is the ADEM™ A4 controller that precisely manages all engine systems. It is a 32-bit computer that uses sensors throughout the engine to regulate fuel delivery, valve timing and all other engine systems that require input, to manage load and performance. The ADEM™A4 controller is the muscle behind engine responsiveness, self-diagnosis, fuel economy and emissions. Software offers flexibility in fuel mapping, allowing the engine to respond to specific application needs as well as weather and altitude conditions.
Air Management
Engines need clean, cool air in order to perform, and as such, air management is key to optimizing engine performance and controlling emissions. A new cross flow design in the cylinder head facilitates air movement, while tighter tolerances between the piston and cylinder liner reduces blow-by gases. The combination of the above three building blocks of ACERT™ Technology provides precise control of the combustion process.
Power Management
Variable Horsepower (VHP) automatically delivers an additional five horsepower in each forward gear 1st through 4th, and each reverse gear 1st through 3rd. This standard feature optimizes rimpull for all gears by balancing traction, speed and horsepower while conserving fuel. The system limits horsepower in lower gears, which helps reduce wheel slip where traction is limited. With the Variable Horsepower Plus (VHP Plus) option, an additional five horsepower is delivered in each forward gear 5th through 8th for more power at higher speeds.
Performance
The Cat C6.6 engine helps the 120M increase productivity by: · delivering a 1000 rpm working range · 3048 m (10,000 ft) altitude capability before engine deration · high engine torque · proper horsepower-to-operating weight ratio Its superior torque and lugging capability can pull through sudden, short-term increases in loads, maintaining consistent, desirable grading speeds to get the work done faster without downshifting.
Hydraulic Demand Fan
The efficient hydraulic demand fan automatically adjusts fan speed to engine cooling requirements. Where additional cooling is not required, the fan will decrease to 550 RPM, in turn reducing required horsepower. This results in lower demand on the engine, putting more horsepower to the ground and improving fuel efficiency.
Hydraulics
The electro-hydraulic load-sensing system provides the foundation for advanced machine controls, enabling superior controllability and precise and predictable hydraulic movements, with the reliability you expect from Caterpillar.
Cat® XT™ Hose
Caterpillar hose technology allows high pressures for maximum power and reduced downtime. Intelligent routing minimizes exposure to damage. Hose clips prevent hose rubbing and excessive vibration for lower owning and operating costs.
Independent Oil Supply
A separate hydraulic oil supply prevents cross-contamination and provides proper oil cooling, which reduces heat build-up and extends component life.
Load Sensing Hydraulics (PPPC)
The time proven load-sensing system and the advanced Proportional Priority Pressure-Compensating (PPPC, or “triple-PC”) electro-hydraulic valves on the 120M are designed to provide superior implement control and enhanced machine performance in all applications. Continuous matching of hydraulic flow and pressure to power demands creates less heat and reduces power consumption.
Consistent and Predictable Movement
The electro-hydraulic system uses valves that provide Proportional Priority Pressure Compensated control for precise implement and machine operation. These valves contain spools that are specifically cut for each hydraulic function on the motor grader. They compensate for differences in flow requirements, based on cylinder size and the difference in surface volume between the rod end and barrel end of the cylinder. The result is predictable, consistent hydraulic speeds whether extending or retracting the cylinder.
Balanced Flow
Hydraulic flow is proportioned to ensure all implements operate simultaneously with little effect on the engine or implement speeds. If demand exceeds pump capacity, all cylinder velocities are reduced by the same ratio. The result is improved productivity in all applications.
Advanced Electro-Hydraulic System
The 120M incorporates a state-of-the-art electro-hydraulic system. This technology is the foundation for revolutionary changes of the machine and implement controls. Advanced joystick controls provide unmatched controllability with precise, predictable hydraulic movements and the reliability customers expect from Caterpillar.
Blade Float
Blade float is built into the blade lift control valves and is optional for some auxiliary hydraulic functions. The blade float feature allows the blade to move freely under its own weight. By floating both cylinders, the blade can follow the contours of the road when removing snow. Floating only one cylinder permits the toe of the blade to follow a hard surface while the operator controls the slope with the other lift cylinder.
Integrated Electronic Solutions
Full systems integration with advanced electronics including Cat® Messenger, AccuGrade™ blade control system and Cat ET, create a “Smart Machine” that optimizes performance and availability.
“Smart Machine”
The 120M fully integrates all core systems creating a “Smart Machine.” The Cat data link shares key data among systems, optimizing machine performance while preventing potential machine damage. Safety
Caterpillar has been and continues to be proactive in developing machines that meet or exceed safety standards.
Operator Presence System
The Operator Presence System keeps the parking brake engaged and hydraulic implements disabled until the operator is present and the machine is ready for safe operation. 'Present' is defined as: · the operator is seated · transmission output speed is greater than zero · the inching pedal is depressed more than 90% · the transmission is not in Neutral The parking brake will engage automatically if the operator is not present. 'Not present' is defined as: · the operator leaves the seat · transmission output speed is zero · the inching pedal is not depressed · the transmission is in Neutral This feature will help reduce operator injury and protect surrounding equipment.
Secondary Steering System
The standard secondary steering system automatically engages an electric hydraulic pump in case of a drop in steering pressure, allowing the operator to steer the machine to a stop.
Speed Sensitive Steering
The steering software automatically provides an infinitely variable ratio between the joystick and the steer tires, resulting in less sensitive steering as the ground speed increases.
Low Sound and Vibration Levels
Isolation mounts for the cab, engine and transmission maximize operator comfort and help to minimize sound and vibration. These modifications provide a quieter and more comfortable working environment, optimizing operator focus.
Hydraulic Lockout
A simple switch located in the cab disables all implement functions while still providing machine steering control. This safety feature is especially useful while the machine is roading.
Brake Systems
Brakes are located at each tandem wheel to eliminate braking loads on the power train. In addition, the brake systems are redundant and utilize accumulators to enable stopping in case of machine failure, further increasing operational safety.
Circle Drive Slip Clutch
This standard feature protects the drawbar, circle, moldboard and circle drive from shock loads when the blade encounters an immovable object. The clutch allows the circle pinion to be disengaged from the drive motor, protecting components. It also reduces the possibility of the grader making abrupt directional changes in poor traction conditions, protecting the operator, machine and surroundings.
Steel Tandem Walkways
Perforated raised steel walkways cover the tandems. This provides a sturdy platform for standing and walking, and additional protection for the brake lines. Grab rails on the top of engine and rear enclosures provide additional safety when using the walkways.
ROPS/FOPS Cab
Isolation mounted to the frame to reduce vibration and sound, the integral ROPS/FOPS structure meets ISO and SAE criteria for operator protection.
Blade Lift Accumulators
Blade lift accumulators absorb vertical shocks and prevent damage to the drawbar, circle and moldboard when the moldboard contacts immovable objects. This option is especially useful in rough grading and rocky areas. Blade lift accumulators reduce unnecessary wear and help to avoid unintended machine movement for increased operator safety.
Drop-Down Rear Lights
Optional drop-down lights fold out from the rear of the machine. This creates a wider, lower profile to be better aligned with passenger cars.
Rearview Camera
Visibility is further enhanced with an optional Work Area Vision System (WAVS), a closed circuit camera that provides visibility to the rear of the machine through a 178 mm (7 in) LCD color monitor in the cab. While not intended to be used in place of direct views or installed mirrors, WAVS is a great tool to help improve job site safety. Developed specifically for rugged applications and environments, the Caterpillar Work Area Vision System is factory installed and is easy to use, offering powerful capabilities and features. This durable camera improves productivity and increases operator awareness of surroundings, work tool activity and changing work area conditions. Mounted on top of the engine enclosure at the rear of the machine, the robust design of the rear view camera can withstand vibration and pressure washing.
High Intensity Discharge (HID) Lighting
The standard 65 watt halogen lamps can be replaced with 35 watt HID lights. The powerful HID lights are four times brighter, improving night time visibility and safety.
Electrical Disconnect Switch
A battery disconnect switch, located inside the left rear enclosure, provides ground-level lockout of the electrical system. The disconnect is lockable, helping to prevent inadvertent starting of the machine.
Engine Shutoff Switch
A secondary engine shutoff switch is located at ground level on the left rear of the machine. This switch cuts fuel supply to the engine while still supplying electrical power, allowing anyone nearby to shut down the machine in case of an emergency.
Fenders
To help reduce objects flying from the tires, as well as build-up of mud, snow and debris, optional fenders can be added.
Additional Safety Features
The 120M has many additional safety features. · Laminated glass on the front windows and doors helps prevent glass shattering close to the operator. · Standard back-up light and alarm provide visual and audible indication of machine direction. · Black glare-reducing paint on the front frame and engine enclosure decreases glare from other equipment lights and reflection from the sun and snow. · Lockable doors reduce theft and vandalism. · Grab rails are conveniently located for added safety around the machine.
